Tsiperus - the gift of the river
The energy of cyperus resembles a fountain: it rises up, and then rushes down. This type of energy gives rise to vivacity, contributes to a dynamic change of events, active communication. At the same time, cyperus will protect against idle talk and idle pastime. It helps to capture information on the fly, to update knowledge. Cyperus in Egyptian means "gift of the river." In the natural environment, this marsh grass forms thickets of 3-5 m in height. Mats and baskets are made from stems, and rhizomes are eaten. In ancient times, papyrus was also made from stems of cyperus.
Description of Cyperus
To eat, or Sovitnik, or Tsiperus (lat. Cyperus) - a large genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the sedge family (Cyperaceae).
About 600 species of the sedge family belong to the genus Tsiperus, Syt (Cyperus L.). Distributed in marshy places and bodies of water in tropical, subtropical and temperate zones.
Representatives of the genus are perennial herbaceous plants with straight grassy stems (with close nodes and internodes at the top of the stem). The leaves are linear, sessile, depart from the adjacent nodes, forming an umbrella-like thick whorl. In culture, only a few species are bred in greenhouses and other rooms.
Cyperus - original, relatively shade-tolerant and moisture-loving plants, are used to decorate aquariums, decorate slightly shaded places in rooms. Small specimens of all kinds are suitable for miniature artificial lakes on the balcony, loggia or terrace.
Features of growing cyperus
Temperature: Moderate in summer, within 18-25 ° C, in winter about 16-18, not lower than 12 ° C.
Lighting: Light place, light partial shade, shading in summer from direct sunlight, good lighting in winter.
Watering: Abundant all the time, the soil should never dry out. Better to water from the pan.
Fertilizer: From March to September, every two weeks they are fed with a special complex fertilizer for indoor plants.
Air humidity: He likes very humid air; regular spraying and washing of leaves is required. It is best to place cyperus on a pan with water.
Transfer: Annually in spring, however the pot should not be too spacious. Soil - a mixture of clay-turf (2 parts), leaf (1 part), peat (1 part) and sand (1 part). It would be good to add some charcoal and brick chips to the soil.
Reproduction: Seeds, dividing the bush, as well as apical cuttings. To do this, cut off the umbrella after it has flowered or before flowering, and put it in a glass of water “head down”, with the handle on top. After a while he will give roots.
Although cyperus is able to tolerate some shading, it prefers bright diffused light, is able to tolerate direct sunlight, shading from direct sun will be needed only in summer. It grows well under artificial light (lighting with fluorescent lamps at least 16 hours a day).
The plant in spring and summer requires an optimal temperature range of 18-22 ° C (the plant needs a constant influx of fresh air); in winter - not lower than 12 ° C.
The basic rule of care for cyperus is that the roots should always be moist. Therefore, it is better to place a flowerpot or a pot with a plant on a deep tray or in a pot with water (it is also possible with wet expanded clay), but so that the water slightly covers the pot. In winter, plants are watered sparingly and kept in a cool place. Watering is done with soft, settled water.
Leaves should be regularly and often sprayed with settled water at room temperature. In winter, plants should be sprayed less frequently, but keep away from central heating batteries.
In the spring-summer period, cyperus is fed 1 time in 2-3 weeks with complex fertilizers.
To stimulate growth, old yellowing leaves of plants must be cut off.
Variegated forms often lose their diversity and turn green. To eliminate this, it is necessary to cut off all emerging shoots with green leaves.
In the axils of the leaves of the plant throughout almost the whole year, nondescript small brown flowers appear, gathered in spikelets.
Cyperus can be transplanted as needed, at any time of the year. The substrate is slightly acidic (pH 5-6.5), nutritious. The nutrient mixture for cyperus is made up of equal parts of humus and peat bog land. 1/6 of the swamp sludge is added to it. Good drainage is required (at least 1/4 of the height of the pot). Pots need high. If the pot is immersed in water, the ground is covered with a layer of sand from above. Cyperus is a wonderful culture for hydroponics.
Cyperus is propagated by seeds, dividing bushes and leaf rosettes, which are planted in wet sand or put in a jar of water.
Tsiperus - papyrus propagates only by division or by seeds, which must be germinated in the light.
Seeds are sown in plates. The composition of the land: peat - 1 hour or leaf - 1 hour, sand - 0.5 hours. The seeds are closed up finely; after plating, the plates are covered with glass. The main care of crops consists in irrigation with warm water and maintaining the temperature of at least 18 ° C.
Fortified seedlings dive into 9-centimeter pots, planting 3 seedlings in each pot. Composition of the land: turf - 1 hour, peat - 1 hour, sand - 1/2 hour. Care of plants: watering plentiful, at first shading from the bright rays of the sun. Mature plants are planted in 9-centimeter pots, 3 copies each. Composition of the land: turf - 2 hours, peat - 1 hour, sand - 1 hour
Whole leaf sockets are better rooted in indoor greenhouses, as well as covered with glass. Rosettes of leaves are cut with pieces of shoots and planted in sand, with bottom heating not less than 20 ° C, more appropriate 22-24 ° C. You can try this way: tilt the apical outlet of the leaves and lower it into a glass of water, without separating from the plant, fix it. Soon, the rooted plant can be separated and planted in the soil.
Cuttings produced in the spring. Before planting on cuttings, the surface of the leaves is reduced by 2/3. On the cuttings, you can cut the upper part of the shoot, under the lower node of the whorl. Cuttings will be placed in a bowl of water. After the appearance of the roots (from the nodes), the cuttings are planted in 7-centimeter pots.
Often propagated by the division of rhizomes, usually when transplanting plants. For division take plants over the age of 2 years. Plants grow very intensively.
Healing properties of cyperus
Ciperus papyrus improves blood circulation in the brain and positively affects people with memory disorders, inattentive, suffering from insomnia, headache, improves eyesight. Tsiperus papyrus is better not to start aggressive people in the house and those who are indecisive are not confident.
Possible difficulties in growing cyperus
With excessive air dryness, the tips of the leaves become brown.
Damaged: mealybug, spider mite, thrips, whitefly.
Types of Cyperus
Cyperus papyrus, or Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus)
It is abundant in the swamps of Egypt and Ethiopia, found in tropical Central Africa. Perennial herb, up to 3 m tall. The stems are straight, strong, triangular in the upper part, ending with a dense rosette of leaves: the leaves are long, hanging down - photo. Multi-flowered (up to 100 flowers) inflorescences on thin pedicels come out from the axils of the leaves.
Highly decorative plant, grown in moderately warm and warm rooms in a humid environment, in pots, but often planted in the ground (provide abundant watering). As you know, the shoots of this papyrus can be used for the construction of boats, as well as for the manufacture of paper.
Cyperus Umbrella (Cyperus alternifolius)
Grows along the swampy banks of rivers on the island of Madagascar. Evergreen, perennial herbaceous plants up to 1.7 m tall. The stalk is straight, usually round, sometimes trihedral, ending at the top with a densely leafy umbrella-shaped crown. The leaves are linear, narrow, hanging, up to 25 cm long and 0.5-1 cm wide; inflorescences appear from the axils of the leaves - small panicles.
Variegata - leaves with a white stripe.
Spider Cyperus (Cyperus diffusus)
Grows everywhere in the tropics. The stems are small, up to 90 cm tall. The leaves are numerous, mainly basal (at the base of the stems), long, wide, 0.4-1.4 cm wide; in the upper part of the shoot are 6-12, 10-35 cm long and 0.4-1.2 cm wide.
